Following the restoration of Martello Tower ‘P’ in Felixstowe, Suffolk Coastal District Council commissioned the Cultural Engine to undertake an options appraisal to find a use which covered the buildings operational and overhead costs. Following a review of the seafront offer, the town and area strategies we developed a plan to use the surrounding green as a specialised artisan market and craft workshops using beach huts to fit into the seafront scene. The accompanying business plan used the income from this to support the use of the tower as a seafront observation tower that contains interpretation of its history and community space. This development added to both the visitor offer and community facilities whilst making the tower cost neutral to the Council.
