Restoring The World’s First Operational Radar Station

The Cultural Engine led this project following a successful Stage 1 pass achieved by Bawdsey Radar Trust in 2013. This included the full development and application process for Stage 2 and ultimately secured £1.8m of capital funding for this important heritage asset on the Deben Peninsula area of Suffolk.

Peter Vadden was Construction Project Manager for the Delivery stage, managing all the consultants, contractors and budgets on behalf of the Trust. The work was entirely focused on the Transmitter Block which is part of the world’s first operational radar station. New interpretation and displays were created for the Transmitter Block, as well as major repairs to the concrete blast walls and physical structure. This project required significant community engagement and ongoing liaison with National Lottery Heritage Fund representatives. Now open it is one of the most popular destinations in this area of Suffolk.
